FAQ Important Note #3: "Defeated" versus "Killed" clarification
i don't get if "killing" is a specific case of "defeating" or if "killing" and "defeating" are totally separate concepts (if you have killed, you can't consider the monster defeated).
ex. i am able to kill "puffer fish" (booty) because i have a combat strenght higher than him. Have i to take a card like Davy Jones' Lucre (booty 2) or i can simple take him as a ship enhancher (monster effect) without specific cards because i am stronger than him? PS: read puffer fish effect to understand my example Last edited by emigio; 07-02-2020 at 02:50 AM. |

Re: FAQ Important Note #3: "Defeated" versus "Killed" clarification
Killing is the most common way of defensing a monster, but it's not the only one. Anything that removes a monster from combat is considered defeat (unless something cancels the combat entirely).
Part of the confusion is that we weren't as precise about the different in earlier sets, so we've had to clarify some answers over the years.

ok, so how could i do with cards like puffer fish (that say defeat but don't kill to trigger his effect)? if i have a stronger combat strenght, do i need a special card to trigger his effect or simply i decide to not obtain the level and his treasure to trigger his effect (he becomes a ship enhancer)

What that particular card is saying is if you are able to defeat it, you can choose to keep it as a ship enhancer. In your example, you have enough combat strength to win. You can choose to kill it, and take the level and treasure as normal, or you can instead keep it as a ship enhancer.

" kill it, ..., or you can instead keep it as a ship enhancer." it is the first time i hear of this mechanic (being able to not kill a monster also if you have a stronger attack ). So i asked if it is possible to do it

Brf is almost correct. If you are strong enough to kill the Puffer Fish, you may choose NOT to kill it and take it as a Ship Enhancer instead. You get the Treasures either way.
