I stand corrected.

Bernal was spectacularly ahead of his time.

"VIIs can log and upload a lot of information about your decision making, brain chemistry and so on. Over the course of a year or so, this is enough to let your VII supplier build a convincing Shadow of you."

That's not mentioned in the official list of the way to do things but it might well be possible. Convincing imitations are so much easier than real uploads. Hard to disprove.

Which leads us to another one. "All so-called Ghosts are actually just AIs pretending to be people!". It's gonna be hard to disprove this one too.

Well if people believe in "Accidental Ghosting" (see first post) the idea that someone could repeat the effect for criminal purposes would be accepted.

That's called an Eidolon and isn't actually an urban legend, but a part of the setting. The methodology may be somewhat different, but a VII-based one is probably doable too.

I actually used that as the basis of a scenario one time. Though the VII/implant supplier abusing the option was (a) quite smart, (b) a self-made paranoid psychopath,* and (c) wildly abusing his friends' trust. ("I can let you have our next-year's-model implant at friend rates, pre-release. Completely validated for safety, we just haven't completed all the admin for commercial release yet.")

* He was a smart techie who wanted to be a better businessman. So he sourced a bunch of grey-market personality-modification nanomods that provided all the traits associated with success in business.

One particular urban legend that corrodes any society afflicted with it is the myth that all politicians are equally corrupt and phoney. It slowly kills democracies and secures the rule of dictatorships.

To what extend is toxic cynicism present in Transhuman Space?

Yeah, I think this is supposed to be part of the service for personal SAIs and LAIs, to learn your habits so well that they anticipate your requests and otherwise know what you want before you want it. And to fill out the zillion surveys so other vendors help make it available.

All politics is saturated with memetic carriers a.k.a fake news, because someone somewhere will find benefit in supporting or discrediting any given cause, sometimes by doing the supporting badly so as to discredit it by association with their lower budget counterparts in manipulation.

Uncurated websites become widely mocked as unreliable sources of information, but curated ones are mocked for their bias. Memetic filters become increasingly popular with some people but are declared as useless or even tools of brainwashing because they don't work correctly when blocked from opposing ideological feeds.

Disbelief becomes an intellectual form of anti-vaxing, with necessary and proper journalism like sourced quotes and rebuttals being listed as if they were presenting a platform for hatespeech with only incidental balance.
