[Fantasy-Tech] Treated Linen 2000
Fantasy-Tech 1 list many exotic equipment to be used in fantasy games, later the Pyramid article "Fantasy-Tech 2000" took some of these and envisioned how these would develop in a more technologically advanced worlds.
Treated Linen Armor is one of the equipment that didn't get such treatment, which left me thinking about its possibilities. For example, TL4 personal firearms deals mostly huge or large piercing damage, so one of these could be a valid alternative to loadouts like English New Model (buff coat and breastplate). It offers less protection (average injury is 3 vs 8.5) while the cost is similar, but it's much lighter and doesn't cause DX penalties. Fast forward to TL8, an Assault Vest with treated linen inserts wouldn't be very useful because most rounds will be dealing normal piercing damage, but it could still be a valid alternative to ballistic panels as it can prevent penetration and bleeding. On the flip side, if you go purely by RAW it could make pi- attacks, favoring armor-piercing rounds. Has anyone ever used treated linen on early modern/modern fantasy games, or thought about it? |
