Default Dear Steve: 1985 Autoduel for Steam?

When are you going to refurbish the 1985 Autoduel on Steam?
I would pay money to have that in my Steam library!
Maybe remake it to a degree so we can design city blocks, arenas, vehicles, mods, maps, ect.
The possibilities are nearly endless if you don't have to worry about anything more than 16-bit graphics (but 32-bit sound).

Autoduellists can only dream what might have been with this Backfire letter from almost 30 years ago. :o)

I am sending for your purview the design specifications and script for Autoduel II, the sequel to Lord British and Chuckles' computer adaptation of Car Wars, which we are developing for Origin Systems, Inc. We are very pleased to have the opportunity to design this game, and we have strong ideas of what enhancements are possible and necessary to add more Car Wars flavor to the game. We are very interested in your impression of the script and any changes you can suggest which would enhance the appeal of the finished game. We would also like to know how you feel about inviting AADA West Coast and World Champions to join the game as NPCs.

At our script review we bandied about the idea of expanding the car construction system and marketing it as a computerized play aid for Car Wars and GURPS Autoduel. Please let us know what you think of this idea.

Yours truly,

Kiri Naiman

Me, I think it's a fantastic idea . . .

I had a chance to look over the script change, and it looks good! The vehicle construction and combat systems look like they will mirror Everybody's Favorite Game, with nearly every gadget up to and including the most recent Uncle Albert's catalog available. Among interesting options are an online newspaper called Autoduel Weekly, featuring local arena schedules and news of famous duellists (including PCs once they become famous), printouts of completed designs, and saving designs to disk (which allows swapping designs between friends). Stay tuned -- more news as it comes in.

I wish I could drop hopeful hints, but I can only sit here and be sad.

Here is the URL of the message board post I wrote regarding Autoduel over four years ago. I still have the Autoduel Courier Tasks Data if anyone is interested.

I posted a screenshot of Autoduel on Twitter in May 2015 when Mad Max: Fury Road was in theaters.

I love that your "tips and tricks" involves sector editing the disks! I guess that would be the 80's equivalent of downloading a mod?

Not quite - it's much more "patch the code by hand typing"...
If you had the very best sector editors, you could apply large chunks of patch.

It was a nightmare if you got an address wrong. And some of the protection schemes prevented suitable backups before sector editing around the protection code. (And that was often just a JMP __ __ and maybe a MOV __ __ __ to set the result flag to a valid result if the program stored the check state to prevent just a simple JMP).

It was unlawful, but extremely common, to apply cracks to stuff you'd bought - including autoduel - just to defeat the copy protection. But there were many neat things a skilled coder could add, and simply post as bytecode in Hexidecimal, telling you, "Type this in sector X, starting at location Y: __ __ __ __"
A typpical hack might have a dozen such items with anywhere from 5 to 50 characters per location.

Thinking ASM makes my head hurt.
