Default TFT related, though tangential - file under "Weird News"

Apologies, this is not directly related to the threads on the upcoming release of the new TFT, but it is a blast from the past that might be of interest to some here.

Background (for those who haven't played TFT before): After SJ left Metagaming, several MicroQuests were released before they closed shop in 1983. Two of these adventure modules were in fact treasure hunts, both authored by Howard Thompson. These were the Treasure of the Silver Dragon and Treasure of the Unicorn Gold. Both involved having clues within the adventure (and you had to play the MicroQuest to avoid finding false clues) in the form of map fragments, inscriptions in runes, cunieform, Chinese characters(? I think) etc. that would lead one to a real buried treasure, in the form of a 31 oz. .999 silver dragon figure, or a smaller (24kt?) gold unicorn figure, both of which I believe were based on moulds from Martian Metals, who put out the Metagaming Microtures line of minis. In addition to the precious metal figure, one would also get a $10,000 cheque (which is a lot even today, and a lot more back c. 1980). The first quest, the Silver Dragon, was found shortly after the MicroQuest was released, by Thomas Davidson. The second one was never found, though some people think they know where it was buried.

Getting back to the subject, the Silver Dragon that was found was buried near a sunspot observatory on Sacramento Peak, NM - which has just ended up in the news under mysterious circumstances:

Perhaps they found the long lost Unicorn Gold...?

Most say the Unicorn was never buried / hidden as all of it / that quest came out right as the company was going under.

Hi all,
I heard that when Metagaming quit, they dug up the golden unicorn and kept it.

Warm regards, Rick.

That's kinda crazy. Hope everyone/everything is ok out there.

By strange coincidence. My copy of In the Labyrinth, AM, and AW were given to me in Cloudcroft, NM.

Actually, given that Unicorn was published in 1981 (earlier in the year, IIRC), I suspect Rick is correct and that it was dug up after Metagaming closed in April of 1983.

I suppose it was melted down, which is too bad. I would dearly like to have seen what it looked like, and if it matched any of Martian Metals unicorn minis (which is my theory, but I don't know for sure):

The post office is also closed there so...with the feds involved the most likely cause is that someone mailed them a "suspicious substance".

We played the second quest microgame while hiking on Isle Royale National Park. There was a map of Isle Royale in the booklet and we always wondered if it was supposed to have been on the island.

Just don't put it on your trophy shelf next to the prize from "Treasure of the Gold Unicorn 2".
