What would change if our sparring partners can hit harder than 4d? (suppose say they are hitting in the 5d+33 range)

4d would be no wounding and stunning and the rest would be real damage. Make sure you buy enough to cover the damage (And treat it as external damage since it can be defended against normally). Note, at those high levels you're going to be paying a percentage of energy vs. a flat 1 per +5%.

You said to buy damage for the spell, but not pay the cost of it, which confused me as I didn't know what the 4d was doing or where being factored in

And I also noted you didn't pay the cost for it. This is so you can price the cost of the enhancements which is a minimum of +1 energy or +5% of the damage effect's total energy cost.

Ah! Got it

Would this likely be greater or lesser?

For anything up to 4d I'd call it a lesser - anything over would be greater I'd think.

My current plan is 'Couple greater control crossroads, time spanning, throw an area effect and duration on there, make some vague discussion of 'time loops' or something, smile and nod at the DM and hope he likes it', under the notion that whatever happens in the area of the effect goes and happens, then 'time loops' or something and its back where it started. Because, magic?
That's a perfectly viable explanation in my book. I'd accept it without hesitation. If you wanted to apply time looping to other situations, we'd need to sit down and hammer out the details, but no-death sparring is fine.
