The characters don't have to be garnished with oddities like a Christmas tree with baubles, but each (of the explorers, at least) ought to have a couple of nice big grommets securely attached to the structural members for easy handling with plot hooks.

Re: [OOC] The Starship 'Fritjof Nansen'
About the marines characters.
INS Fritjof Nansen has a marines fleet protection detachment of eight Imperial Marines commandos, making up a commando section led by a corporal. This section is organised into two teams of four, the Action team (A-Team) and the Base team (B-team). The A-Team consists of four young marines at the peak of physical prowess, for kicking in walls, rescuing hostages, assaulting WMD sites and that sort of thing. Trigger-pulling arse-kickers with lightning reflexes, ample aggression, and not a hesitation among the four of them. The corporal will lead in person, and he must have completed infantry, drop, and riot schools beside the section-leaders' course and the sergeants' course. Which means four complete rotations plus at least part of a first, a minimum of 23 years experience including initial training. The rest will be young privates (qualified) who have not yet started on a specialist MOS. Which means at minimum that one will just have finished two years of training and be in his first posting, and that at maximum one will have twelve years of experience and have just finished his third 'graduate school'. That is, the maximum experience is two years of initial training with infantry school, five years in the reserve and doing interventions, then riot school and five years posting to a residence, then drop school: twelve years' experience. The B Team is what makes up for not having the support of regimental HQ: four older marines who have done the entire program of infantry, riot, and drop schools, and then at least one technical school besides. It includes a medic for patching people up, a sapper for blowing things up, an electrician, a mechanic, a pilot, etc. It is led by a lance-corporal who is going to have to do a lot of platoon-sergeanty and chief-of-staffy sorts of things, and manage commissariat and supply. It is not expected to deploy as a fireteam often: rather, it will supply technicians to be attached for special purposes, help the explorers with their camp etc. The PCs are going to be the A-Team. Don't bother me with hard-bitten-old-marines concepts.

What's Strickland's career path look like? University on Seeonee. Some kind of vaguely relevant degree. Psychology? Ethnography? Athropology? Linguistics? Recruited by the IM while still in school? What then?

Re: [OOC] The Starship 'Fritjof Nansen'
Umm. Matriculates early at say, 17. BA in Anthropology (with ROTC-equivalent?). Qualifies for honours; unwittingly offends the scholar who offered to be her supervisor by deferring her honours year (who appreciates what these things mean at 20?) Takes a year and a bunch of savings, gifts etc. on a 12-month tour of four planets. Finds them fascinating but horrible and stuffed to the gills with things that need fixing. Possibly an influential affaire on a liner. Decides rather than go home and finish her degree, to volunteer for the Empire.
Assigned to Imperial Marines officer training at the Academy on Luna, aged 21. Advanced standing for academic studies completed allows her to graduate B.Mil. at 24. Posted to regiment as an ensign, one year. Confirmation as acting sublieutenant at 25. Up to four more years on post. Then Intelligence School (one year), five years HUMINT experience. Staff College. INS Fritjof Nansen?

Re: [OOC] The Starship 'Fritjof Nansen'
Luke Bunyip finds that he can't continue. Zorg has kindly agreed to take his place. Zorg's participation will necessitate delaying the commencement of play until the beginning of November.
As things stand zorg is holding cards for the dean of Survey, the first lieutenant, the counsellor (international law), and a marines commando private.
What do we have for zorg? What does zorg have for us?
