Re: More info on the upcoming Pocket Box project.
We're getting closer to the $125,000 stretch goal and Car Wars Expansion Set 5.

Like with the Ogre KS (with the baffling stretch goal to have a voice in the new Car Wars edition) I'm glad this exists... but $200 for just the Car Wars stuff feels a little pricey. I mean, it'd be a great price if you wanted the pocket box games too. But as someone just hungry for more Car Wars (hungry enough to consider rebuying old supplements just to freshen them up / get some die-cut counters !) it's probably a little rich for my blood. But glad it's going well; which means more money into the engine that'll one day crank out a new, improved, slick, amazing edition of Car Wars. Maybe. I didn't really want Ogre either, so I have no idea (is that forum even still a thing)?! |

Re: More info on the upcoming Pocket Box project.
Unless, of course, you wanted to add seven copies of Car Wars as your choice and then hand the game out as gifts to others you're introducing to the game.
Also: The project isn't over. We continue to unlock stretch goals and add more to the campaign. Two more stretch goals were unlocked yesterday: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects.../posts/2419842

Re: More info on the upcoming Pocket Box project.
Sadly, it looks like I'm not going to be able to participate in this project. I just won't have the cash free in time.
That said, I've been ruminating on Boat Wars. Even if I was contributing, I don't think I'd miss it if it wasn't included in this campaign. It's not directly compatible with the other Car Wars Pocket Boxes, being more of a spin-off. It also started the "vehicles bloat" that so plagued the game in its later years. I'd almost rather see it saved for the potential Could Have Been campaign, as a theoretical revised Pocket Box edition. The same goes for Aeroduel and Tanks, though I suspect those would require more substantial editorial work to make them fully playable - and new art. Just pondering here. |

Re: More info on the upcoming Pocket Box project.
Pretty sure Boat Wars would be compatible with the pocket box - 10 phase vs. 5 phase movement doesn't really change anything for boats...
And converting 10 phase to 5 phase movement is pretty basic The bloat issue is a whole other thing. I don't really think Boat War blew up the game - boats are similar enough to cars with a few different rules for taking on water, etc. You know the oceans are rising in the future right? :) Hovercraft with protractors for movement was a bit silly, but hey it's SJ so we gotta have GEVs... ;) Quote:

Re: More info on the upcoming Pocket Box project.
You missed what I meant: you can't use boats and cars in the same game without some serious effort. So it's really a spin-off. The more I think about it, maybe it should be treated as spin-off and given a full rulebook.

Re: More info on the upcoming Pocket Box project.
Isn't that essentially what's happening with "everything gets a Pocket Box"? It's like the old _Time-Life Books_ series -- buy only the books one wants; ignore everything else. (For ex.: Boats and Flying Machines are Really Important up here in Pacific Northwest; they would be even more so in the CW-verse. For someone living in northern Texas, Boats may not be that big a deal.)
