More or less, yeah. As a side note, the comments on how the fight
actually went for most players (running around in circles, throwing occasional potshots, and chugging copious amounts of healing potions) got some chuckles out of me.

Build it so the blade and a portion of the haft can be detached (roughly more akin to a plug bayonet than a socket bayonet), and you've got yourself a detachable sword. You'll want to give it crossguards, but then it's a decent idea to do that anyway (both for aesthetic reasons - it's more clearly a sword on a stick with a crossguard up there - and for practical reasons, so crazed foes can't run themselves through to reach you).

Eh, I'd expect all such mages to already know a spell that handles that for them, although I suppose this might be a good option in a no/low mana area (or a very high mana area, if the mage fears critical failures). Indeed, I'd expect such a spell to be amongst the first such a mage would learn. Said spell probably gets rid of the waste of familiars as well.
