[3e] Half Moon (ship)
Half Moon (TL4)
The Half Moon (or Halve Maen) was a ship under the ownership of the Dutch East India Company sent under the captaincy of Henry Hudson to navigate a way through the Northwest Passage. The ship instead arrived in New York Harbor in 1609, before returning to Europe. The Half Moon (or at least the 1909 reproduction) featured a 5' 10" hold in the very bottom of the body, with a 4' high tween deck. The tween deck housed the cannons, galley, pantry, powder magazine, and bunks for the steward and cook. The forecastle contained five berths, each of which could hold two men if necessary. Aft of the fo'c's'le (on deck) is the ship's boat as well as the swivel guns. Near the aft of the main deck is the whipstaff, binnacle (compass) and ship's bell. Behind the steersman's station is the captains cabin, poop deck and the first mate's cabin. The Half Moon has been reconstructed twice--once in 1909 by the Dutch to commemorate the 300th anniversary of Hudson's travels, and again in 1989 by the city of New York as a traveling museum. The latter reproduction can be visited today in New York Harbor. Subassemblies: Body with Mediocre lines +6, one 50' Mast +1, one 58' Mast +1, one 33' Mast +0. Powertrain: 3,314 sf of Cloth Sails. Occupancy: Up to 4 in cabins, up to 18 in bunks. Minimum crew is 1 driver + 3 sailors. Cargo: 3,300 cf Armor: 3/8W overall Weaponry: 2x 3-pdr cannons [Body:R,L] (100 shots each). 2x 50mm Swivel guns [Body:R,L] (100 shots each). Body: Navigation instruments, luxury cabin, cabin, 18 bunks, galley, 1,800 man-days provisions. On Deck: Capstan (4,800-lb. winch with 6-man muscle engine), 42-cf ship's boat (12'x5'x1'), primitive controls. Statistics: Size: 75'x16'x68' Payload: 46.3 tons Lwt.: 92.3 tons Volume: 8,905 cf. Maint.: 76 hours Price: $68,885 HT: 9. HPs: 3867 Body, 65 Foremast; 87 Mainmast, 28 Mizzenmast. wSpeed: 13 wAccel: 0.7 wDecel: 1 wMR: 0.05 wSR: 4 Draft: 7'. Flotation Rating: 194 tons. Design Notes: Structure is Medium, with Standard materials. Waterproofed. Armor is DR 8 Standard Wood. The reproduction featured planks of 4" thickness; the DR is extrapolated from the table on p. B125. The volume of the armor is figured into the design, as per the rules on p. VEii5. The ship is designed at TL4, although the statistics are from the TL6 reproduction (built in 1909). Body volume was determined using the Builder's Old Measurement with a overall length of 75' and a beam of 16.2'. It was easy to justify volumes as low as 6,810 cf and as high as 10,267 cf; the figure used represents a compromise between various ways to calculate a Structure First volume vs. the required space in a Component First design path. The height of the masts was determined from a schematic drawing of the Half Moon replica. The reproduction ship carries 36 tons of ballast. This could be converted to an additional 14,400 lbs. of cargo. Features "On Deck" are not included in the Body volume. Design draft was 4.2'; the actual draft is shown.
