[Basic] Intolerance
Hi guys
After reading the Intelorance Disadvantage again after a long time, I noticed that there is a mechanic behind it. I didn't know about it and since I didn't remember reading that you had to make a reaction roll for PCs I asked myself how to handle Intolerance correctly if a PC has it? Just keep an eye on him to roleplay it? Or would you advise the PC to make a reaction roll when appropriate? I would very much like to hear how you have handled Intolerance in your games. Re: [Basic] Intolerance
Player characters don't really make reaction rolls unless the player feels like it. Despite the "you" terminology in the rules, those rules are more about non-player characters.
Something to bear in mind, though, is that regardless of what the character says or does in the moment, the target of its Intolerance will still react negatively to it unless character has always made an Acting roll in regard to the target and the target hasn't heard what the character is usually like. |

Re: [Basic] Intolerance
I don't think any of my players has taken it for a character.
However, the canonical way to handle this is twofold. First, the player must roleplay the Intolerance; if they encounter people of the kind specified, they can choose their level of reaction, but they must be stiff and cold, or what diplomats call "correct" (for Good reactions), show open distaste (for Neutral reactions), or refuse to associate with them at all (for Poor or worse reactions). If they don't follow this, they get no experience for that session. Second, if the player does carry through, the target of their Intolerance reacts at -1 to -5—which the GM does roll! I might even give a -1 if they fail to roleplay, on the assumption that there are little covert signs of dislike that the player didn't convey—or perhaps of condescension or self-congratulatory "tolerance." Come to think of it, there's a third way to apply this: Treat the -3 on reactions as a penalty to skills. Say if the PC has to teach the NPC, or perform therapy, or lead them in combat, or anything else that depends on social interaction. Bill Stoddard Bill Stoddard |

Re: [Basic] Intolerance
Thanks a lot for your replies! I think I now understand how to handle a PC with Intolerance!
