[3e] Clearwater Sloop
Clearwater Sloop (1969, designed at TL5)
The sloop Clearwater is a 106-foot wooden sailing vessel designed after 18th and 19th century Dutch sailing sloops. With a large gaff rig, a hinged centerboard, and a wide, shallow hull, these vessels evolved to deal with the challenges of strong tides, shallow waters and variable winds encountered on the Hudson River. Originally, they were used to carry cargo and mail, and provided a vital link between communities on the river. It features plank-on-frame construction and a 28' bowsprit. Subassemblies: Body +7 with Mediocre lines, one 108' Mast +3. Powertrain: 4,305 sf of Cloth Sails in a Gaff-and-Jib Rig. Occupancy: 14 Cargo: 70 tons. Armor: 3/5W overall Body: Navigation instruments, 13 bunks, 1 cabin, galley, 420 man-days provisions, 300-lb. external cradle for yawl boat, 4,800-lb. capstan. Statistics: Size: 106'x25'x108' Payload: 70 tons Lwt.: 120 tons Volume: 19,947 cf. Maint.: 85 hours Price: $54,754 HT: 11. HPs: 6620 Body, 302 Mast. wSpeed: 13 wAccel: 0.7 wDecel: 1 wMR: 0.05 wSR: 5 Draft: 8'. Flotation Rating: 519 tons. Design Notes: Structure is Medium, with Standard materials. Waterproofed. Armor is DR 5 Standard Wood. The volume of the armor is figured into the design, as per the rules on p. VEii5. Actual sail area was substituted for design area of 4,666 sf. Volume was calculated using the Builder's Old Method based on an estimated length on deck of 75'. Empty weight is 92,429 lbs. Calculated draft was 4.5'; the actual value is shown. The design features 8,888 cf of unused space. In the actual craft, some of this is used for 2 toilets, a diesel engine, and fuel. These were not included in the design; in addition, the real-world ship would have been built as a TL7 vehicle. http://www.clearwater.org/the-sloop/...pecifications/
