I just realised, that if GM wants a fallout-in-space, my previous statements are sort of useless. All you have to do is to set time period of the game a bit further away. About 100 years is probably enough. (and maybe - just maybe - reduce total number of successful strains)

Both reasonable. I could easily see the "apocolypse" part not hitting until the 23rd century, and I'm willing to put the game a further 100 years after that so the abandoned cities of the world are nicely ruined and overgrown.
