... and of course the ever-popular giant alien warriors!

Giant Alien Warrior
79 points
In your normal state you are an extremely large humanoid, but you can be shrunk down to human-size with special equipment. Commanders are often significantly larger than the rank-and-file (see Gigantism, p. B20).

Attribute Modifiers: ST+40 (No Fine Manipulators, -40%; Size, -40%) [80].
Secondary Characteristic Modifiers: SM+4.
Advantages: Alternate Form (Human; Trigger, rare, miniaturization chamber, -40%) [9].
Disadvantages: Increased Life Support (Massive) [-10].
Features: Unusual skin and hair color.
Variants
Clone Warrior: You are bred only for war, and are ignorant in the ways of science and this human thing called “love.” Add Clueless [-10] and Hidebound [-5]. -15 points.
Sexual Dimorphism: It is common that giant alien warriors are separated by sex, with specialized roles. For males, add ST+20 (No Fine Manipulators, -40%; Size, -40%) [40]; females add DX+2 [40]. This adds ST+2 and HT+2 to the male Alternate Form, and DX+2 to the female. +40 points.

... and a design that stretches the viability of Spaceships mecha (at least compared to the original version).

KUONOICHI 5 (TL9)
GURPS Mecha, p. 72
Disguised as a mild-mannered minivan, this family-friendly vehicle can transform into a humanoid mecha at the touch of a button! In the Cybermech Damocles campaign setting, it is used by the secret agency UNISTAR in areas where combat jets and battlesuits would be too conspicuous. It has a 10-ton (SM +4) unstreamlined hull.

Front Hull System
[1-5] Light Alloy Armor (total dDR 5).
[6] Major Weapon Battery (turret with 2cm very rapid fire conventional gun).
[core] Control Room (C4 computers, comm/sensor 2, one control station).
Central Hull System
[1-4] Light Alloy Armor (total dDR 4).
[5-6] Robot Arms.
[core] MHD Turbine (two Power Points).
Rear Hull System
[1-3] Light Alloy Armor (total dDR 3).
[4] Fuel Tank (0.5 tons rocket fuel proving 0.15 mps delta-V).
[5!] Reconfigurable System (Robot Leg to Chemical Rocket, 3G acceleration).*
[6!] Reconfigurable System (Robot Leg to Wheeled Drivetrain).*

* One Power Point powers both legs.
The Kuonoichi has a stealth hull. It is operated by a single pilot.

TL Spacecraft dST/HP Hnd/SR HT Move LWt. Load SM Occ dDR Range Cost
DRIVING/TL9 (MECHA)
9 Kuonoichi 15 0/4 12 3G/0.15 mps 10 0.1 +4 1SV 5/4/3 – $0.964M

On the ground, it has Move 10 and Hnd/SR +4/3 with Robot Legs, or Move 4/35* and Hnd/SR -1/4 with Wheeled Drivetrain (using two Power Points). 54 Jump Points (see Pyramid #3/40, p. 5).
If using the armor volume rule, dDR is 9/7/5 and effective size is SM +3. Cybermech Damocles uses the Fast Transformation design switch (Pyramid #3/40, p. 8).
Variants
Typically carries three equipment packs, two with a Major Battery (fixed 16cm missile launcher) on the Front [4-5] locations and a Major Battery (handheld 3 MJ laser beam) on the Central [5] location. This weighs a total of 1.5 tons, which does not affect vehicle performance. Each pack costs $100K.

This might be a good place to ask this question. Reconfigurable Systems, if you have a robot arm that transforms into a missile battery, is it assumed that that battery can fire while in Arm mode? Or can it not? My understanding is the latter is true.

I think that's my only real hang up when it comes to reconfigurable systems, because, to use Macross as an example, Valkyries can fire their micro missile volleys while in jet, gerwalk, or battroid mode. But with GURPS spaceships rules its not possible to have an arm and fire a shoulder mounted missile at the same time (if they're part of the same reconfig system)

PS: This thread is super useful for me, and the Pyramid: Vehicles article about Mecha was invaluable for my planned Macross campaign.

-- My understanding is that no, while in one form you cannot access the capabilities of the other. Now, strictly speaking you can transform that one system into the other (20 seconds in base Spaceships, quicker if you use the Fast Transformation switch). This leads to a bit of a grey area that all mecha design systems have - what components are accessible in which form? For mecha based on existing designs it's rather simple to consult the source material and rule, for example, that the Valkyrie has three distinct forms with some systems transformed and others not.

-- I don't believe that non-equipment pack Valkyries can fire missiles in battroid mode. This gets back to the issue of module accessibility too; consider that a Valkyrie in Spaceships will look strikingly similar to the Stormhawk (not surprisingly, as it's an expy). So the Robot Legs transform into thrusters, the arms holding a handheld battery fold away in jet mode. In Gerwalk mode the legs are technically not really fully transformed but they rarely function as actual legs in Spaceships terms (more like landing gear) so we can rule that they are still in thruster mode in the somewhat abstract Spaceships system. The arms are a bit more problematic, primarily because we are getting into the serious issue of "module scarcity" that hits many mecha designs. For a Valkyrie expy the arms are obviously not used in jet mode so they are reconfigurable, but into what? Well, the standard missile loadout is used only in jet mode most of the time, so it makes sense that we can sacrifice this to the reconfigurable gods. With Fast Transformation you can sort of canonically get around the issue of the arms being used in gerwalk mode and the missiles being usable (I don't believe most Valkyries can go into robot mode before firing their hardpoint missiles, will need to consult my artbooks again). The handheld issue is addressed in the article, as by base rules you cannot fire them without arms available (obviously contradictory to much source material)

-- I had a few more Macross jokes in the article, but they got cut by editorial (BOO HISS), like a note in mook mecha regarding having a taste for pineapple salad. Obviously Macross and Gundam are the two BIG mecha genres the article tried to address, but I was also heavily influenced by Gasaraki (my favorite real robots genre show) and Transformers (especially regarding how I approached combiners and combiner expansion packs).

Oh hey, another Ryosuke Takahashi show I've not heard of. I'm currently up to my eyeballs in Votoms and Dougram anime, I guess I'll throw another one on the pile.

Also, thanks for the advice on running variable fighters.

-- And now some Ultra-Tech based designs.
-- Note that some liberties were taken (there is no battery power supply in Spaceships) and I used the statlines as the guide (the UT text claims the exospider has eight legs, the statline lists 6 so I went with 6 as that also freed up module slots).
