Default Running Away

My friend and I ran into a conflict last night during an Epic game of Munchkin. I had a Bard in play and was fighting a rather strong monster that I couldn't beat. I used the Bard's ability to make him help me in that combat. But he wanted to run away. So here are my questions:

1. Can you run away even if you are winning a battle?
2. Can you run away when you are forced into helping somebody else?
3. Can you use a card that forces you to run away when you are forced to help someone else?
4. If you can run away, can the person you were helping ask for help normally?

Thanks much!

Only if the card says so.

Let me make something absolutely clear with respect to Running Away and combat:
  1. You can only Run Away if you are losing the combat. This is said as much in the rules.
  2. The only person who can decide when to give up trying to win the combat and accept defeat is the player whose turn it is. A helper can not, suddenly, decide that he no longer wants to be in the combat and Run Away, nor can he, by will alone, force the combat to end and have both players Run Away. There are cards that allow this, but it is not in the helper's ability to end the combat, as I said, by sheer will. Most of these cards force the combat to end, so BOTH players must Run Away. Most, if not all, cards which allow a helper to leave on his own let the helper leave without penalty, so Running Away is not required.

Tying to be brief.

Long answer seem to confuse some Munchkins.

Yes, but brief answers can lead to further questions, so I figured I'd toss in the commentary to back up the brief answers, just in case someone wanted to know the "why" as well as the "what."
