Default [Thaumatology] A variant on Streamlined Spell Casting

Modified from Game Geekery's Streamlined Spell Casting: I'm replacing the Effect Results table with one based on successes and failures.

Effect Results (3d6)
Succeeds by-----Results
Crit----------Effect works much better than intended. Player chooses Type (ignore the Type die roll).
8-9----------Effect works as intended. Effect Type die indicates Type (for all results unless otherwise noted).
5-7----------Effect is close to what was intended.
2-4----------Effect mostly works as intended but with small differences.
0-1----------Effect mostly works as intended but with major differences.

Fails by-----Results
1-2----------Effect almost works as intended and with minor negative consequences.
3-9----------Effect does not work as intended but instead creates negative effects.
Crit----------Spectacular catastrophe and/or the opposite of intended effect occurs. GM chooses Type (ignore the Type die roll).

I'm reasonably certain that this doesn't really unbalance the rest of the rules listed on that page; you just need to pick which skill you're rolling. The idea is to make the system more suited to campaigns instead of one-shots, and to allow the players to distinguish between mages of various levels of skill, fixing two of the downsides of the system. One might also have some mages specialize in specific aspects of magic (e.g. Marwyn the Mistic has 'Ritual Magic (Weatherworking)', Golden Greta casts using 'Alchemy (Esoteric Metallurgy),' et cetra), to make them more unique but less versatile, though the more of that sort of thing one adds, the less streamlined the system becomes.

Thoughts?
