Default Everybody loves a swashbuckler!

As he was called out by name, here's a swashbuckler to add to the martial artist, bard, knight, wizard, and cleric who are plotting their next move in this seaside tavern.

Brewis Smalls, a.k.a. "Lucky the Agile Goon"
250-point Human Swashbuckler
In his years as a buccaneer, Lucky found nobody feared a pirate named "Brewis" – and though "Smalls" was an amusing family name for a man of his size, it wasn't all that pirate-y either. He got his nickname during a battle in which the rival captain, witnessing him wade through better-armed fighters swinging a simple cudgel, exclaimed, "Who is this joker – Lucky the Agile Goon?" To this day, Lucky figures it's good to be a goon.

Lucky isn't complicated: He loves his "crew" (fellow delvers). He loves a good party, especially one that involves brawling and singing. He loves treasure (which he always calls "booty"). And he loves braining enemies with his club of tropical hardwood – and occasionally bashing them with an oversized driftwood buckler studded with jagged seashells.

Luck took up dungeon delving simply because a mate told him it involved more treasure – err, booty – and fighting. His nautical background has proved valuable there, providing him with climbing abilities honed in slippery rigging, knowledge of all manner of complex knots, and a knack for tossed lines and grapnels. He's also confident in his knowledge of the underworld, despite the fact that he's rather slow on the uptake.

His largest talents, though, are sheer strength and speed – a lethal combination. He's big but hardly muscle-bound, and has catlike agility and reflexes. His only superhuman talent is the ability to seemingly replace knocked-out teeth, which he claims is because he's part shark. Sure, Brewis – whatever.

. . .
If by seaside tavern you might be referring to The Broken Oar (p. 27, Dungeon Fantasy 10: Taverns), I'm already there.

If anyone with a Area Knowledge (Local Coast) and Cartography skills would like to join me in the corner booth, I'm still trying to decide if this treasure map is worthy of keeping Lundarian's tankard topped off all night.

Ha! Fantastic! I love how versatile the swashbuckler template is. I was talking to someone about how the difference between a swashbuckler and a knight is how many pieces of gear they need to be effective. Lucky would certainly do better with a rapier, but there's no other way to start as a 250 point Swashbuckler with all your gear and no points traded for gear.

Lucky just likes the fact that he does 3d+7 with a $30 stick. And the fact that crushing damage is one of the sorts to which nobody but slugbeasts has special resistance . . . it works just fine on everything but Diffuse targets, especially well on liches and skeletons and, and isn't affected as much by many common varieties of armor. His career goals include raising ST to 20, so he has effective ST 22 for striking and can swing his stick for 4d+9 thanks to that sweet per-die Weapon Master bonus.

He'd also like a permanently glowing helmet made of solid gold.

That damage is just nuts. With the right rolls, he could kill the average schmuck with one torso blow, no special hit locations or critical needed. A very nice demonstration of how to go for big damage even with a "lowly" weapon, and how "swashbuckler" doesn't just mean Ren Faire rapier fop.

Also worth noting that he'll do 2 hexes of knockback to typical foes even on an average hit, tossing foes to the ground (or off of ledges, etc.) left and right. That wouldn't work with an edged weapon.

About those skeletons he'll fight: Vulnerability means x2 crushing damage, and Brittle means any crippling hit to a limb breaks it off, right? Sounds like he can't not destroy or immobilize any skeleton with a single blow. A huge sea monster skeleton might be the challenge he needs...

Any plans to put this ongoing series of PCs into character forms for download and play? Or is that a task waiting for a volunteer?

No real value to it . . . The generic "club" on p. 99 of Adventurers is a balanced Broadsword weapon – basically a well-made length of thick dowel. The only thing the dwarven modifier does is make an unbalanced weapon balanced.

He'd be happy to come into possession of a magical club, though. A Penetrating Eternal Club of Icy Smiting would be just peachy!
