Thanks to those above for the historical references, the detailed chart, and the laugh!

Re: How much for royal blood?
Of course if your Status 8 emperor happens to be Charles II of Spain … well that's either very royal blood or possibly going out the other side of the scale... the blood may be expensive to acquire, but it may not be a great deal of use. But who knows with magic?
Random thoughts: - in the era of humoral medicine, royal blood could be let a lot more freely - on the other hand, in setting that believes in magic, giving someone else a sample of your blood would be something close to insanity. To do so would be, at the very least, trusting them with your life. |

Re: How much for royal blood?
As of January 2011 there were 5,753 people in the line of succession to the British throne. There are more now.
It is a good bet that everyone reading this is a descendant of Charlemagne. Royal blood is as common as dirt. |

Re: How much for royal blood?
So would royal inbreeding be a way to concentrate the blood? The more inbred the monarch, the more his blood is worth?

Tell that to the Hapsburgs & Egyptian Pharaohs with congenital health problems such as three rows of teeth or missing clavicles .

Re: How much for royal blood?
Yes, but the inbreeding is controlled by the power behind the throne, who is using the blood for their own alchemical use.

Though it strongly depends on the magic system. It might be pure genetics, it might be about coronation ceremonies performed by the proper priests, or it might be about exercising practical power.

Re: How much for royal blood?
To be in line for the throne you have to be a legitimate descendant of the Electress Sophia.

Of course in real life the crown is legitimized by whoever is tough enough in battle and wily enough in statecraft.
