Default The Favorite Monster Thread

When it comes to Dungeon Fantasy, we all have some favorites. Monsters either in the book, inspired by another system or purely homebrewed, that embody a particular concept that the players will enjoy battling.

My favorite so far is the ankheg, a pony-sized beetle monster that can shoot acid. They're great monsters because you can use them just about anywhere--they're burrowers and show up in the wilderness, dungeons, and even farmer's fields or in horrifying warrens beneath cities!

What's your favorite monster and why?

I like Doom Children, simply because it got the biggest reaction of horror from my players. They seem so innocuous, sort of messed up that little demon babies are coming at us with knives, but whatever. Then they start exploding. My melee focused, ranged attack deficient party was freaking right out.

For me it's when the freaky looking little giggling babies hit melee and start crippling legs in one swing that the big "OH ****!" moment happened. The explosions were just icing on the "And no, you don't get to harvest anything of value off this corpse" cake.

But yeah, add my vote to Doombrats, Boombabies, the Dirty Diapers From Hell...

Just a question for the sandy/muddy clerics out there--does Mud Jet work on Doomchildren? I imagine being temporarily blinded may help even out melee. A Judo Throw may make an AMAZING combat finisher!

The GURPS monster I'm most apt to remember is the bushwolf from Banestorm, followed by the Nerlock from Creatures of the Night.

My favorite monster is humans, because you never know if they are friend or foe, they negotiate, and all around interact interestingly with the players.

My group doesn't play DF. "Monsters" are quite rare in our games.

My group rarely plays DF, either. That said, monsters run the gamut; my current group is fending off an extradimensional invasion of 20 foot tall killer robots and cyborgs.
