Default Can a thief backstab the player he his helping in combat

Another thief question, can the thief (who was sucked into combat via dwarf toss) discard his equipped and active weapon/armor/bonuses to backstab his "partner" in combat in an attempt to get them to run away/die?

Moderator edit: Since this question is not a follow-up question to a response to the original question in the thread in which it was posted, it was moved it to its own thread. We moderators prefer that new questions get their own threads to improve the chances of future searches finding the answers.

According to the Thief card, the thief may discard a card. This means that he can discard a card from his hand or from any of those he has in play (except his Thief card) in order to backstab a player that is in combat. Though he could normally do this once per player in combat, he can't backstab himself. And, because neither the rules nor the card says otherwise, a Thief can backstab while he's in combat.

On for the useful information column: The rules do state that unless otherwise specified by the ability (e.g., Cleric's resurrection and Wizard's charm spell), a player may discard from his hand or from his cards in play when using a Class or Race ability powered by discards.

Thanks, we were under the impression since the thief was in combat he couldn't discard his current equipped gear.

Any cards you have in play are available to discard for Class/Race abilities (except for the Class/Race card that gives you the ability), even if you're in combat. The rules actually provide a comprehensive list of what you can't do with Items during combat: "While you are in combat, you cannot sell, steal, equip, unequip, or trade items, or play items (except for one-shots) from your hand." Discarding Items to power abilities is not on that list, so that's why it's something you can do during combat.

Also, I wouldn't consider a Dwarf who was selected to be thrown via Dwarf Tossing to actually be in combat afterwards. Those that are in combat are the combat owner and their helper.

Correct. I missed that aspect of the situation. Dwarf Tossing is just a special card that only can be used if there's a Dwarf in the party that's not already in the combat.
