Default New Unarmed Combat Talents

We’ve hit the $235k stretch goal and the new UC Talents have been posted to the TFT website. I haven’t had a chance for an in-depth look yet but I’m pleased the IQ requirements have not been dumbed down; UCV still requires IQ14 etc.

I also think Brawling is a nice, cheap option at IQ7, cost 1.

Default Does unarmed damage scale with ST?

UC I says, "Regular bare-hands damage is 1d-4" but Guy said the rules say it depends on ST.

Can we get clarification on this?

I take that to mean the "base damage" of 1d-4 as shown for ST8 or less on page 21 of Advanced Melee.

Sure, that's what I'd take it to mean at my table too.

I'm asking for clarification from Steve or Guy, though :).

Yes, it would be nice to have official clarification.

Also, all 40-point UC V characters have exactly the same attributes.

This seems to... lack variety.

I would think that, due to their rarity, that won't really be an issue. If you're running a game based around Kung Fu masters you'll need a different set of rules (or at least extensive house rules.)

Saying it's not an issue might be viewed as begging the question (literally).

EDIT: d'oh, I apparently have a common misunderstanding of the phrase :).

Anyway, saying it's not an issue doesn't address my point in any way. Players who make UC V characters ought to have some freedom in their builds. Players with 40-point wizards certainly do!

It’s a simple, 3 Attribute system. Lots of characters will have similar attribute scores and any given point level. The difference with UCV characters is the prerequisites and the costs to buy the Talents, which as you say, makes them the same from that point of view. My point is, they should be incredibly rare. No doubt some future supplement can differentiate schools or styles of martial arts, but I think it’s fine for a start.

I have to keep reminding myself TFT isn't GURPS. This is one of the problems with a simple system. But for my purposes now, TFT is better than GURPS for the people and plans we have.

House rules to the rescue I suppose!
