Future of DFRPG now that SJ has TFT back....
so this has become a mild concern among my group and I think this thread belongs in this Forum (not general RPG) since its focus is strongly on the direction of the possible fate of DFRPG and all players of that game have a stake in this discussion (and probably don't look at the general forum)
although several of us are experienced GURPS grognards, overall we like how DFRPG has streamlined things for this genre and we're looking forward to future development and support...(even if its just porting over things from DF) Recently SJ did the impossible and got The Fantasy Trip rights back. (a GURPS and thus DFRPG precursor game from 80's for those only acquainted w/ DFRPG) I was thrilled to hear this of course and I loved the game our old GM David ran for us way back when..(had a Lizard Man w/ a crossbow, eating his way through the dungeon denizens..) Lots of talk about reprinting and make the game available again going on in the General RPG forum...great ..except is this going to drain focus away from DFRPG ? we all know how limited SJ games resources are for how many game they can focus on at once (and remember how the Ogre reprint meant no new GURPS for awhile) And TFT has a lot..(A LOT) in common w/ DFRPG... is the company up for supporting 2 dungeon bashing games? is it competing w/ itself ? I feel like the 1 year old puppy now that the 3 month old kitten has arrived in the house. |

I dont think there is any real competition here.
TFT is a real simple and fast paced game, great for one shots, quick play and hack & slash. GURPS is a much more complicated and versatile affair. DFRPG is closer to GURPS than TFT with a lot more complexity and detail available but not nearly as simple as TFT.

Re: Future of DFRPG now that SJ has TFT back....
This is a a very insightful topic.
I'm sure that there can't be any formal conclusions until there is a lot more feedback regarding both DFRPG and the forthcoming release of The Fantasty Trip. From the limited information I saw here, it didn't appear that the SJ Games was currently willing or able to really advance and expand TFT beyond a reprint of some items. The interesting thing is that there does seem to be a vacuum in SJ Games catalog for a somewhat lighter RPG than GURPS or even DFRPG. I wish that a "GURPS Medium" would step up to fill that role, but you could speculate long term as to something evolving from The Fantasy Trip re-release building up from a lighter origin. (Disclosure: I have never been exposed to The Fantasy Trip.) The talk is that you can always simplify GURPS to whatever level you wish. I've found that you would need a specifically designated rules set with closure. What I mean is that if I choose to omit my choice of GURPS rules for simplicity, some of the rules I keep end up re-engaging me into the complexity I chose to omit. There are no self-contained ("closed") tiers of complexity in GURPS among which you transition. (Of course, this would be a tall order.) Pie in the sky: I would love to see GURPS Lite advance into a "medium" rule set with some closure that would also allow you to jump across into full GURPS if desired. The reason a designated rule set is more important than individual GM fiat is that it provides for a larger shared community. Now I probably just blew this forum's topic adherence. If so, maybe someone can help me correct this (spawn a separate thread???). |

Does DFRPG not have "closure"? It is a self-contained system.

I cannot see The Fantasy Trip having any effect on the Dungeon Fantasy Roleplaying Game. They are two different games from two different eras. One is a "nostalgia product" and the other is essentially a boxed GURPS genre treatment. I'm fairly certain that their markets are almost completely different, and very certain that work on these games involves different people.

And one from which SJ Games learned lessons. They've had, I think, ten more Kickstarters since Ogre, and the only one which caused any blips in the GURPS schedule was the DFRPG, since the DFRPG had to consume the same brains (Kromm and PK's) as would be eaten by GURPS projects.

My first inclination is to go with some kind of Horde Zombie variant; they can certainly come in swarms but there's obviously a gigantic solo boss monster version (DFRPG, and the even bigger Ogre Designers Edition) that competes in the same ecological niche as smaller projects, and shoves them to one side when it's chasing delvers for their brains :D

Re: Future of DFRPG now that SJ has TFT back....
I don't see TFT causing any issues. The two games can easily co-exist, each game appeals to a different sort of gamer..
GURPS is a tool box for building multi genre campaigns, it is versatile and complex, even in its simplest form it has a lot of moving parts. GURPS appeals to hard core gamers who want it all and don't mind putting in the work to get it. All of this is true of Dungeon Fantasy as well. TFT is not much more than a board game with some RPG elements. It is heavily grounded in fantasy, it is simple and leaves most of the depth to the players imagination. This appeals to the casual gamers who do not want to spend a week building their character trying to squash everything in, they just want simple and fast. |
