Christianity as "exotic" mythology is fairly common in anime.

The Catholic Church is simply filled with visually stunning paraphernalia. It's always going to attract artists of all kinds.

There have been Christians living in India for a very long time.

It's a minority faith there, but I don't guess that it is all that exotic.
I'd expect the educated class in Mumbai to be at least somewhat familiar with Christianity, given the larger than usual number of Christians living in that city.

YMMV

Christianity is often misunderstood and misapplied in Hollywood, for that matter.

True, very grand and imposing especially if you're looking at it from the outside, figuratively.

You can be familiar with something and still see it as exotic and different.

Indeed, one can have that attitude.

I'm just pointing out that Christianity has a long history in India, much longer than in Japan.

Yes St. Thomas the Apostle did live long before St. Francis Xavier, but Christianity is much more of a presence in both Japan and Korea (the place where I think Keiko comes from) than in India. In fact, aren't Korea and the Phillipines the most Christian nations in East Asia?

...and the Philippines were stuck as part of the Spanish Empire for quite a long time, which would explain their half of that. ("400 years in a convent...")

But anyway - Christianity is apparently India's third-largest religion, with about 24 million followers. Though, this being India, that only means 2.3% of the population.

There are not very many native Japanese Christians.

Christians are by far the majority in the Philippines.
There are a lot of Christians in South Korea.

India has more Christians than Japan by both percentage of the population and gross numbers.
