Is Austerity a measure of 'the PCs shoot it out in an alley and no one notices' vs 'the PCs shoot it out in a back alley and there on FBI most wanted'

Or

'The PCs do what the PCs do, and the world spins on uncaring' vs 'So change the PCs, so change the world'

I'm not following which is meant, or some combination of both/neither

It's a measure of "If my PCs shoot someone how does the world react?" In a high austere campaign the answer would be "The police are investigating you." in a low austere campaign the answer would be "Was that person important and/or is it dramatically appropriate to involve the cops?"

Chris,

I am a big fan of Incantations, so kudos! I just have a few questions about one of your samples - Rainbow Spray - from your blog.

1: The bestow a penalty used to penalize resistance rolls, is that limited by levels in Incantation Gift. i.e. the description of Rainbow Spray can only be used by an character with Incanter's Gift 5?

2: The pdf says that resistance is based on the better of the subjects Will or HT, yet Rainbow Spray indicates rolling against specific attributes, including DX. How would I accomplish that with spells of my own creation?

3: Does duration always need to be applied, even for afflictions? The pdf says that afflictions allow a new roll to 'shake them off' after minutes equal to margin of failure. On my initial read, I assumed the duration was for other than the afflictions.

4: there was a note:

* Being based on Will, HT, or DX increase adds another two effects for the purposes of casting time (depending on the effect), but being a visual effect and allowing separate instances of resistance reduces this by two, so casting time is unchanged.

I can't parse it. Could you explain further?

No, you could theoretically house rule it as such though. And the GM could say "No" if he wanted to.

It's basically adding "Based on Attribute" for +20%. That would increase the final SP cost, though. If you want a roll against the lower of a pair of attributes, add +40%. Essentially, use the rules for Limited Spells (GURPS Dungeon Fantasy 19: Incantation Magic, p. 15)

This is a case of either or. Either you roll every minute of the Duration of the spell to shake it off, or you add no Duration and it works for a single combat round.

Oi vay. It's been one of those months. I didn't deliver on the goods last week and for that I apologize. Today I come out swinging. Ever wonder how Fright Checks affect your players (not their characters)? What ways you might be to include someone whose failed a Fright Check? I got a few ideas.

Really wish you had stuck a couple of those in, seems like maybe there could have been a Offer Bonus Imbuement to combine several and save word count.
Anyhow added the Designer Notes to the Pyramid entry for the Magic index.
