There are some weapons especially a hunting rifle that uses electric ignited ammo, at least for a decade, but for common uses the drawbacks are bigger than the benefits. You get rid of a source of mechanic failures and the weapon is shooting faster and more reliable than a bolt action rifle. Nevertheless it isnīr widespread used.

As for recent events in japan, the weapon used was just a result of the fact that itīs nearly impossible in japan to get a gun. So anyone wanting to use armed violoence has either to use traditional japanese weapons aka Tanto, Katana etc or build his own gun and ammo. In fact the yakuza are known to import gunsmiths who build small guns and ammo, mostly revolvers and pistols for them. One 3 D print can use more durable material for the broad masses it will be difficult to stop the spread of weapons. Most parts of a simple gun are just that to simple and often used for legal reasons that you can build printers with a build in blockade to print this parts. and a lot ogf other material can be used for cases and propellant, they are just not as common as the usual stuff used.

My understanding is that traditional Japanese weapons are almost as heavily restricted in Japan as firearms. If you want to make a katana in Japan, you have to go through a long process of accreditation and use traditional methods, so that the prices start in the high thousands of dollars Euros or pounds. If you want to import it, you have to go through a long and difficult bureaucratic process. Knives with blades 15 cm or more in length are also restricted to registered members of knife-using trades.
