Lasers aren't useless. They fit for when you need to hit fast moving objects and/or need extreme accuracy but not TL maximum damages slug throwers/rockets could give.

Super-high frequencies have less absorption than moderately high frequencies, so it gets a bit better -- though still not as good as visible light or radio.
