Modern military maps
My players are almost ready to head into a gang base that was originally built as a National Guard armory before the world turned into a post-apoc setting. I'm reluctant to try Googling for suitable maps because I'd rather not have Homeland Security on my case. (With a major Air Force base just south of me, they'd have to investigate.) OTOH, three of my players are former military, so I need a layout that's somewhat plausible. Does anyone know of a gaming map download that would work? Hexgrid preferred, but I can convert from square grid.
Alternately, how hard would it be to adapt a fortress map from a fantasy setting? |

If it's just an armory it's not a very complicated structure. Natty Guard armories are IME always single story buildings that combine a few offices, an outdoor motor pool, an open bay, and an armory. You don't need to adapt a medieval fortress, rather think of a very small rural elementary school or something.

Re: Modern military maps
The ones I've seen are usually:
A) Hangar model Large central garage/formation area. Typically 8-10m ceiling, 6-8m wide, 10-20m long. offices & classrooms with 4m ceiling to either side, sometimes with a second story with bunkrooms and supply rooms. The armory proper may be a second building, and is heavily reinforced concrete. usually 10m x 5m or so, with a 4-5m ceiling. A separate fallout bunker may exist, or a bunker may be under the offices. B) Quonset Huts 5m radius quonset huts: 1 for garage and formation space, usually 15m long. 1 divided in half between the offices and armory. also 15-20m long A 3rd might be present for barracks. 15 to 30m long. A large enough facility might have multiples. C) miniature bases. Dedicated purpose built concrete and/or wood buildings. In all cases, the armory proper has one entry door to an antechamber/guard post, and a large, secured area for weapons storage, often with an issue window. Larger armories might have a secure loading bay for 2.5 ton trucks. The buildings are pretty straightforward. Some are divided into several secure chambers; one for ammo, one for small arms, one for explosive ordinance, one for other restricted issue items; each such has an issue port. There is a former guard armory with maps online: http://www.sfarmory.com/floorplans.php And some proposed plans: http://stillwater.govoffice.com/index.asp?Type=B_BASIC&SEC={84F617F4-5CC2-4E72-A953-C49B82D6F1C5} http://www.urbantallahassee.com/v4/i...lete&Itemid=88 |

Re: Modern military maps
The small elementary school thing is the most common I've experienced. My guard armory while I was still in consisted of a large bay area (double basketball court (complete with the lines and hoops), a small barracks area above the bleachers, half a dozen offices around the bay, and an equipment storage room with attached weapons locker. Outside was a parking area about the same size as the building where we kept the vehicles (engineering battalion company).

Re: Modern military maps
Hmm... if anyone is knowledgable and has the time, writing up a National Guard armory might make a decent Location article for Pyramid. Not just layout, but a roster of equipment and weapons, and how such a place might be used. I could see that being useful for Action, Atomic Horror, and Post-Apocalyptic games.

Yes. The SF Armory was bought in 2006 by Kink.com, and used as a studio for production of, uh, content for their web sites.
