Default What is the right amount of GURPS?

All of 4e? All of 4e and 3e? All the way back to 2e? 1e? Man-to-Man? TFT??

Inquiring minds want to know where you draw the line.

=)

I very rarely reference older editions, and probably have only ever done so twice for anything involving actual play. I typically only really use 4-5 books in a given campaign. So the answer is "Some 4e; as needed".

Basic Set, Fantasy, Thaumatology, Sorcery and a host of home-written material converting a setting to GURPS.

I bought almost everything for GURPS when it came out. Notable stuff I skipped where Powered by lines as I already had the rules and stuff that only used Lite did not sound very interesting to me.
Never really thought about it but that bit might be useful data.

Fourth edition material I came late to the party on due to no gaming group and work schedules.
I have since gone back and bought some Third edition material again in PDF because of utility and some softcover as over the years most of my old books were too damaged or even lost.
Also bought most of my Fourth edition stuff in PDF form and printed form when available.

To own, as much as possible. (preferably in dead tree format)

To read, all of it.

To use, well it depends on the game. . .

All of 4E with exceptions (untill they arent).

For 3E there are still some books that I remember fondly that I should replace with PDF. Espionage, Operation Endgame, COPS, are examples of books that were exceptionally well done in 3e and no TRUE analog has really come along to replace/update them in 4e. Action! For example is a Great series covers espionage well enough (cinematically of course), nut I am patiently watiting for some fine writer to Catch a Bond/Kingsmen/Man From U.N.C.L.E. on T.V. and flesh out the Espionage Exploits a bit more (And of course, tech. You can never have enough Spy Tech).

There is ALOT of good stuff in those 3e Books, not just as grist for the idea mill but well stated, easily convertible stuff you can have ready at hand.

I dont know of any 2E books or 1E books so I cant speak to those, so Imna say....

Get all the 4E, if your group holds together, the books you dont need today, you will need eventually.

Get all the 3E you want. Theres lots of good stuff in that edition, and Alot of it is available in PDF dirt cheap.

For me: most of the Basic Set, parts of Action! 2: Exploits, and whatever else fits the campaign/genre, supplemented by various Power-Ups line as needed. The use of Thaumatology, Magic, the various -Tech books, Powers, various Pyramids, and genre books vary from game to game.

Any 3e books I'd use are mostly setting fluff. Villains, Bestiary, Fantasy Bestiary, and Dinosaurs have been my go-tos for various games, though I'm constantly updating the stat blocks.
