Default Asking opinions about preaching

Hello, all guys and girls!

After a long time i do return once more to ask for advice from the community.

A Priestess character on my Low Magic/ Low fantasy campaing is talking to an NPC for a few game sessions about the idea of this NPC become a priestess herself too.

The main problem is that even as the religion have some nice background over the village, after helping on an important event, the religion itself is a bit tricky to regular human morale. But its not the main point.

What i do ask is if someone have any idea about what skill could set a long term influence, i.e. make this NPC change life style, from mundane to templar life, and if someone have any idea about the penalties on this check due to this radical change of life.

I do thank any sugestion in advance!

Public Speaking for giving a sermon; Diplomacy for long-term persuasion to your point of view. Likely an appropriate expert skill in the religion of choice to represent formal training.

Fast-Talk is short term. The more cynical among you might assign it to faith healers and the travelling revival show.

Other skills would come in handy, of course.

A combination of Theology, Teaching, Propoganda, Diplomacy and Public speaking... I would say off the top of my head. Need to look through skill-list to give a better answer.

Sorry, people... but it dont looks right.

As its not a contest about "who knoes more about the religion", i suppose a character with skill level of 12+ dont need to make a roll to speak about a topic it have knowledge and the NPC not.

Diplomacy? Teaching? Propaganda? Diplomacy is for a light and soft behavior on a meeting, Teaching is much like pedagogy (techniques about how make the studant absorbt better the topic) and Propaganda is made to be skilled on medias and the better way to use it to propagate an idea.

I suppose the puvlic Speaking is the key here... Perhaps it will demand lots of rolls... I am not sure.

Public Speacking justifies why politicians go to public assembly to defend or propagate their points of view.

Public Speaking is certainly relevant. So is Religious Ritual; if you make a critical success you achieve a stunningly moving prayer or ritual, if you make an ordinary success you at least give a sense of the divine. Since religious ritual is the primary thing the faith is selling, it should be one of its main selling points.

But I think you underestimate Diplomacy. It's not just about appeasing or coaxing people. It's about making a reasoned case that doing X is actually in a person's interest. Imagine a well trained Jesuit giving a systematic argument for why it's beneficial to follow church teaching on something. Whereas Oratory is more the skill for an old style revival preacher.

Ok... I know i placed it in very simple terms, but if you look better, you will see Diplomacy involves "negotiating, compromising and going along with others". Its like a "trade" skill. It serves for exchange of favours and seek out best interests based on each part's needs.

The situation i have here is much like "defend and convince about a point of view".

What i miss is the type of mechanichs, apart from the RP, i should use.

Propaganda skill may have a role here too.

I think Propaganda is completely out, because the task here occurs while two people meet and talk arround one hour or two.

Propaganda involves the planed use of readio medias, slogans, TV space and outdoors. Design a project of how is the better way to promulgate an idea.

Some financial and organizational skills would be helpful. There have been many religious figures who selected for these abilities and not for the piety. ;-)
