Shield as Cover
Sorry if this has been posted, but i did not find it. :)
If I have a shield large enough to cover (actually, to hide, hehe) behind it, shouldn't it count as cover against area/cone attacks? I mean, if im facing a dragon, and he uses his fire breath: is there a way to cover myself with my large shield crounching behind it, or do you think this is too unrealistic? Thx in advance. Burger |

Re: Shield as Cover
I believe you must take a ready maneuver and declare you are using it for cover. You can not claim it as cover for a defense.

Re: Shield as Cover
If you're fighting against a dragon throwing spears and swinging a sword and suddenly he throws a breath, you'll need to roll for defense.
Otherwise, if his strategy is just to kneel and do an AOD, I'd allow automatic success, I'd also suggest carrying a pavise, not a large shield(You find it in Low Tech)

And even if you didnt readied to cover in this rule, if you blocked it with a really big shield, shouldn't provide some sorte of reduction of damage? Quote:

Re: Shield as Cover
Then either you are attacking blindly(with max skill 9) behind your shield, or you are partly exposed.

Also, remember that a large shield gives you -2 skill with your weapon.

And about blocking the breath: if it is a cone attack, it states that I can dodge to get cover. Why not block the get behind the shield? |

Re: Shield as Cover
I am fairly sure there is no rule like that in any 4th edition book.
It would be nice if there was one... Quote:
It's really going to permit you to get within a yard of it?

Re: Shield as Cover
Not in the books, but against Large Area Injury attacks (B400) like this, I would permit a Block defense to add the shield's Cover DR (B484) to your 'least protected hit location', which could substantially boost your effective DR. You're still getting hit, though.
