Anyway, despite all those ideas, I'll probably post a cyberpunk one - it's what I've been putting off for the past few rounds. I think following (E)'s lead and focusing on one portion of the setting, in this case a corporation, might be interesting. I'll get it up soon-ish, unless someone else beats me to the punch with a different idea (btw- feel free to do so if motivated.)

Has it been 4 months already? (i.e. Since the last post on the last thread.)

Anyone else getting a creative hankering? What should we try next?

I was thinking it was about time for another one.

I still like the odd geography idea, as well as focusing on cultures near one another and their conflict with each other.

I'm not feeling very sci-fi at the moment.

The cross-dimensional fantasy setting you suggested sounds neat, though those are big settings to build.

I'd like to see many races with impressive but divergent abilities.

Many of those ideas could be wrapped together, I suppose.

Since Reflpace (iirc) mentioned his Chalice World, I've been thinking about exploring different world topologies somehow, and a geographic gimmick could do that on a different scale.

Combining that with a cross-dimensional setting would mean either a) a mobile city that transports itself between different dimensions (using its own mechanism or moving between external gates), or b) the place-of-marvelous-geography is a nexus of cross-dimensional travel (like Cynosure or Sigil). These could also be interesting, but might draw focus away from thinking about the geographic aspect.

There is no need to center it all on a single city. I was thinking that each world could have its own geographic gimic. It would help make each world memorable and unique from the others.

The travel mechanism doesn't need to be terribly accessible to the common citizen. In some ways this type of fiction is strengthened by a filter of some sort that makes travel between the worlds hard.

We could also make the geographic gimic interact heavily with the cross-dimensional aspect, which could bring the focus back on the gimic.

Do a cross-world caravan or trading company.

I'm not really sure how all this would look. I guess there's only one way to find out...

So how should the opening post look?

Just say, "We're building a campaign and setting that will combine the elements of fantasy, travel between worlds, planes and dimensions, unique geographic elements, and mercantile adventure."?

ETA: OK, thread started here.

I've updated the thread index post here with the fantasy multiverse thread (which reached a heroic 160+posts over 3 months), the magic vs tech campaign jam thread, and the DFRPG megadungeon thread, even though it doesn't have the question-answer format.

I've also put a copy of the index in the GURPS Resources Threads of Lasting Value thread, where it should have a bit more visibility for the punters.

So, bookkeeping out of the way, what's next on the menu?

---

One thing that happens with these is that as the thread progresses, each new post gets longer than the last. This happens because we have a firmer idea of the setting and start getting down into details and in-depth character of the setting, which is great and what I find enjoyable with them, but it means that each new post takes longer to properly conceive and then write (personally speaking). I think it also might increase the barrier to casual participants who might come along mid-session and want to contribute.

So, is this just inevitable? Is that actually the ultimate point of the exercise? Or maybe we could try a thread with a word limit for each answer or some other mechanism that encourages shorter, quicker, yet still creative, posts.

---

So, is anyone grabbed by one of the remaining ideas in the posts above, or are there some shiny new suggestions?

A late reply to your suggestion, (E), but how do you think a LitRPG setting would look?

I think a word limit is a fantastic idea. The problem I foresee with it is enforcement. It has proved difficult and often thread-killing to enforce rules in these exercises.

I was considering a 1 sentence limit, but I thought that would be too strict, so instead I think a limit of d6 sentences might be fun to try, declared by the question asker. Keeps the answers snappy.

It'd look like:
Question 18: What secret is the king hiding?
(d6 roll of 2, answer with only 2 sentences please.)

This is much shorter than we've been doing, but I think it'd be cool, just as an experiment for one iteration.

The choice of topic remains. Maybe we should roll on a table?
