Default [3e] Oblivion Bubble Ship

Oblivion Bubble Ship (TL10)

Used as a platform for drone maintenance and security, the bubble ship is used by techs on post-apocalyptic Earth in 2077. It is powered by a pair of vector-thrust drives, situated in rotating ball pods to either side of the body. Distal to, and associated with, the pods are a pair of small wings that aid in control and provide a small amount of lift. The crew cabin is a completely clear ball at the front of the craft. It can rotate 180-degrees to either side, allowing the pilot to even face backwards in flight. In case of an emergency, this ball cockpit can separate from the body of the craft to increase the chances of crew survival.

The ship has limited sensor and communications capabilities: it is intended to work in conjunction with an ops center back at the landing tower. It can carry parts required to fix the drones, as well as a folding motorcycle for overland exploration.

It is armed with four pairs of 10mm gauss guns. These are mounted above and below the cockpit, and rotate with the ball cockpit.

The bubble ship was inspired by the appearance of the Bell 47 helicopter, and was designed with the concept of form being informed by function. A full-size model was built for the movie, with the cockpit being ergonomically tailored to Tom Cruise. (GM’s may allow a +1 to Piloting skill for a “Vehicle Bond” Perk.) The ship can be operated nearly indefinitely in atmosphere, and for up to 1 man-day in space.

The “historical values” are from the full-sized production model that was built for the movie. The size of the engine pods was estimated from a photo of the craft; given an overall length of 25’, the pods were measured to be 5.45’ in diameter. The movie prop was constructed of aluminum and weighed between 4,000 and 5,000 lbs. Since the bubble ship came from an interstellar race, TL10 was elected as the design TL.

The design features two separate thrust systems, one for space, and one for atmosphere. The payload weight of water required to fuel the fusion rocket is prohibitive for atmospheric operations. The design can carry about 50 gallons of water and still operate in atmosphere. This gives about 1 hours’ worth of Fusion Rocket use--enough to assist in takeoff and landings or for a short space hop. It is assumed that when launched in space (where payload weight no longer matters), the fuel tanks can be filled to their full capacity. Note that both engine systems are required for VTOL in atmosphere.

Bobblehead not included.
