Default Lack of Air Support in Ogre

So in the future we have giant OGRE tanks, cruise missiles, trains and wheeled trucks. Where are the attack helicopters, A-10 Warthogs or missile armed Drone aircraft? Do the Laser Towers make the above not cost effective?

That's the consensus. (Plus all those nuclear weapons which have a habit of swatting air vehicles out of the sky.)

Thanks! Just realized there are no LOS rules. Forests and even cities do not block line of sight. All attacks are with small nuclear warheads, but you would think several city or forest hexes would prevent seeing and therefore firing at a target.

It's an abstraction, and some aspects do defy reality*. At 1.5 Km per hex, the scales are more suited to all fired shells being some kind of rocket assisted artillery, rather than traditional direct line-of-fire rifled weapons.

Aircraft would only serve to complicate the rules, and one will note there aren't really such rules in other ground based games like Squad Leader as well.

*Example, a train moving at M6/7 takes several Km to stop, when it should stop within a few hundred meters at most.

In some ways the GEVs play the role of helicopters but I have seen various house rules for different types of aircraft.

Aircraft are kept out of Ogre in order that tanks may rule the battlefield. Air power = no tank domination, therefore no tank hypertrophy.

Put another way, the goal was to design a near future tank game, so reasons had to be invented to make the game at least somewhat plausible.

Thanks for all the replies. Forgot about the scale of a hex. Sometimes my brain goes off in a tangent before it kicks in, "I couldn't see the hexes because of the OGREs".

This is also the future as seen from shortly after the Vietnam War, wherein the US lost about 10,000 aircraft, over half of which were US Army helicopters, against an enemy without a very sophisticated air defense network.

There is LOS, but only for lasers. The lack of LOS is actually one of the things I love about Ogre/G.E.V. and one of my least favorite parts about using lasers.

Continental Siege Aircraft (also to be found in The Ogre Book) contains (very non-official) rules for aircraft, including the eponymous Continental Siege Aircraft, flying Ogres.
