Default D1-D4 chits

We haven't played more than the basic games so far but have managed to find the use for all the components except the D1-D4 chits.

Only possibility we've spotted so far is the variable defence points of hardened CPs but it seems a bit of overkill to have so many of them just for that.

Can anyone give us a clue as to what they are intended to be used for please ?

Revetments and emplaced weapons are two uses I can think of.

Another use is scenario-specific designations of targets. For example, marking a specific bridge with a non-standard D value.
