Personally, I think the most reasonable approach is just to house rule that there is some default between Two-Handed Sword and Two-Handed Axe/Mace.

I study HEMA longsword, too, and while most techniques wouldn't work and I'd be at a disadvantage compared to someone who's trained with a great-axe, I could certainly pick up an unbalanced weapon and throw an oberhau or zornhau with it. A -4 default seems fair to me between balanced and unbalanced weapons.
