Default [3e] Celebrist Galley

Celebrist (S. “Silver-cleaver”) (TL3)
The ships of Edhellond serve as an integral part of the culture at the haven. The Sindar are the best Elda shipwrights, and their vessels are said to never founder in heavy seas. The clinker construction of elven ships was inspired by overlapping swan feathers, and all Elven vessels still display a swan figurehead. Some actually mimic the swan’s graceful shape. A few of the Elven ships are brightly painted, but the planking of most is treated white or gray wood from the giant birches. Three designs predominate in Edhellond: the Celebrist, the Aearran and the Pelannun.
The Celebrist is a common Elven warship and has a single mast with a square sail. It depends heavily on rowing power. Elven rowers display great endurance on long voyages, since they need only a few hours’ rest. The rowers double as archers, and are so agile they can fire steadily on a rolling sea. There are 15 of these ships at Edhellond.
The ship has a crew of 72: 4 officers, 8 sailors, and 60 soldiers (who are also the rowers). There are 20 oars, with 2 rowers per oar. The ship carries 12 days of provisions, but no cargo.

Subassemblies: Body with Mediocre lines +6; 63' Mast +1.
Powertrain: 40x Rowing positions [Body, L,R] and/or 1,588 sf of cloth sails in a Square Rig.
Occupancy: 4 officers, 8 sailors, 40 oarsmen/soldiers.
Cargo: 0.

Armor
Body: 3/5W overall.

Equipment:
Body: Navigation instruments, primitive controls, 18 bunks, 864 man-days provisions.

Statistics:
Size: 70’x16'x63’ Payload: 12 tons Lwt.: 25 tons
Volume: 4,000 cf. Maint.: 264 hours Price: $97,000

HT: 11. HPs: 1134 Body, 103 Mast.

wSpeed: 13.7 wAccel: 1.3 wDecel: 1 wMR: 0.05 wSR: 4
Draft: 2.5’. Flotation Rating: 114 tons.

Design Notes:
Body is 4,000 cf; Mast is 25 cf. Structure is Light with Expensive materials and Mediocre lines. Waterproofed. Armor is Expensive Wood. Primitive controls. Under oar, wSpeed is 6.6 mph and wAccel is 0.08. Statistics above are for sail power alone with a fresh breeze (x5). The height of the mast was determining from a drawing of the ship as 70’, but then set to the maximum mast height allowed for the volume of the ship. The design uses the component-first design path, up to the maximum volume for the ship’s displacement (40 tons at 100 cf per ton). Design draft was 2.7’; the source material’s draft was used.
The craft was given Fine Quality construction (p. VE204). This adds 4x to cost, but gives +1 HT and uses ¼ unmodified cost for Maintenance Interval.
