Parry with off hand
Does parrying with off hand suffer penalty? An if it does is -4 penalty applied to the parry roll or to the the Melee Weapon skill (for -2 penalty to Parry)?

Re: Parry with off hand
DHMBWM, but this is answered directly in either the Combat or Tactical Combat chapter in Campaigns. Can't quote directly (obviously), but the answer is that the -4 off-hand penalty is applied to the weapon skill, resulting in a net -2 on the Parry. (I think this might have been a sidebar in one of these two chapters, as opposed to being directly in the text.) If no one else comes along with the direct citation, I'll add it when I can next get to my books.

Re: Parry with off hand
-2 to Parry with most weapons, no penalty for Main-Gauche, Karate (and typically other unarmed skills, though this isn't explicit), or for characters with Ambidexterity or the appropriate Off-Hand Weapon Training.

Re: Parry with off hand
FWIW, the rule is on p. B376. -4 to the skill, which results in a net -2 to Parry, since Parry is based on half skill. Of course, there's no penalty with the Ambidexterity Advantage (see p. B39), and other factors may also limit the penalty, as Vicky points out.

Re: Parry with off hand
Parry can also be based on half DX, which is not a skill. Yes no?

Although, Vicky states that unarmed skills don't take the off-hand penalty at all, in which case I wouldn't expect unarmed Parry to be affected either, but such is not mentioned in Lite, and IDHMBWM so I can neither confirm nor refute this assertion. |

Re: Parry with off hand
off hand penalty applies when you use your off hand.
if you have DX at 10 and strike with your off hand you roll at DX-4 if your karate skill is at 14 (DX+4) and DX 10 you roll at DX-4, that means your karate skill (which is based off of DX) would then be a 10 (since 10-4+4=10). Parry is equal to DX/2+3 OR skill/2+3, which ever is better karate, judo and boxing do not suffer off hand unless you are using the optional rules in MA. I am a rule geek. >.< |
