What about honorary (and sometimes literal) membership in societies like the Trust, the Royal Geographic, or the In and Out?

Same details, but it was 14 Hussars (Emperor's Chambermaids), since rolled up a couple of times to form the KRH.

I rather wondered if it might not be better policy, if a regiment was straining budget to simply retire it, and make it's depot into a museum (and possibly a veteran's club), saving it of course for some future unhoped date when it needs to be fattened again. This merging may be good accounting but people who die have a right to their tribalisms.

It is also a way to assimilate Opposition Force specialists, for these can go to retired regiments, and indeed it might even encourage re-upping, or certainly re-registering.

In Mileau O of Traveller, the Emperor owned 2% of every LIC. That is kind of a throwback to the days when the English monarch was expected to only go to Parliament for taxes when he wanted to carry out the laudable project of beating up French or Scots.

I had an idea of Doges and the Archducca owning some of the more high-class hotels. This reflects hospitality being an appropriate trade.

One thing they could have is their choice of products from such-and-such guild. The crafter of course gets free advertising.

In Traveller there are hints of foods and beverages only grown for the Emperor's table.

A space emperor (or his family) of course can have a whole planet as a hunting park.

If it is a polygamous society, the winner of a bride-show can count. How much this is "belonging" depends on the nature of the culture and whether or not considering people property is considered appropriate.

A nomadic society can have personal horses, herds, etc.

Vikings can have the King's ship (like the Long Serpent).

Also don't we have to distinguish between stuff a monarch owns as head of a Corporation Solo and that which they own like anyone else? Queen Elizabeth owns the apple she just bought for her horse in a different sense from that which she owns the unclaimed swans on the Thames.

In Jerry Pournelle's future history at the time of The Mote In God's Eye, it's mentioned that Jamaica Blue Mountain coffee is strictly reserved for the Imperial Family on Sparta. Of course, such restrictions can be gotten around with enough money...

Currently the amalgamated regiments often live on as companies/squadrons within the new regiment … which can lead to some very odd names (such as two of KRH's squadrons being 14 SQ and 20 SQ). Traditionally the colours would be hung up in the nearest parish church to the depot and the depot itself sold for conversion into expensive flats. Presumably, if we ever do have to "bring forth the banners from the days gone by" (albeit in a way that Mr Bragg would not approve of at all), the named squadrons could be used as cadres to re-muster the old regiment and presented with their colour (or a replica thereof).

This may be tending more into sumptuary laws that what is actually owned - this and gifts of monopoly open up non-tangible possessions of the crown in terms of legal powers...

Unless the cultivar is trademarked as coming from crown property. In which case anything similar is by definition, an imitation.

What does LIC mean?
