So the evil item can't be unequipped, but it doesn't take up a slot.

What if the evil item was usable only by a certain class, and the player later switches classes. Does the combat penalty stay?

No, that's not right. It's no longer equipped! In a very significant sense, it's not an Item anymore. If it remained an Item, then it could be looted when you die, and we know that doesn't happen. So, it doesn't matter about Race/Class or what have you. The Foof Gun is a very odd case and in no way should be considered an example of normal behavior for how the curse works.

So even though it's not equipped and not an item, you still get a penalty from it?

It's a curse that creates a semi-permanent penalty based on the bonus of the highest bonus Item you had when you were hit. You keep the card to note that you have the penalty, so yes, even though you're not equipping it and it's not really an Item any more, you still get the penalty because that is what the curse says in the first place.

This curse is not the same as Cursed Thingy, which locks the Item in place and nullifies its powers and bonuses.

Ok so here's my question. The card states "Nothing else will reduce or remove the penalty, and there is no other way to get rid of the item."

What about a wishing ring? The wishing ring says it removes ALL curses, and clearly at the top of the card it says "Curse!" Will the wishing ring remove this curse?

The wording on that specific Curse overrides the Wishing Ring, unless you bring out the WR as soon as the Curse appears.

So why would the Wishing Ring be usable for this curse if played immediately? I feel that the curse specifically states that nothing else can cancel it apart from losing two levels. I would take that to mean including the Wishing Ring. I'm still a little new to the Munchkin scene so there may be an established rule I'm missing here--forgive my ignorance!

The Wishing Ring, if played immediately, is able to cancel the Curse before it takes effect. Once the Curse does take effect, though, it's too strong for a Wishing Ring to dispel.

To clear up a question about this card for my group:
Can it be played on any item, such as armor, or do you have to pick a weapon with the highest bonus to become evil?

Looking at the card, it's the ITEM that gives you the highest bonus, so yes.

Now, wait 30 minutes and I'll be told I'm wrong...
