A rich gentleman in Regency England would pay to have some of his own horses stabled along a route he expected to take at speed.

I believe Jimmy the Hand... er, Squire James did it in one of the Riftwar novels. It carries a lot of weight to be able to, honestly, say "If you want anyone in your barony to survive to see next week, it's vitally important that I get to Krondor. Now."

Being the personal squire (and well known go-to-guy) of the heir-presumptive of the kingdom doesn't hurt, either.
