Can a Thief Backstab & Discard the Thief Card

Q: Can a thief steal an item or backstab a player & discard the thief card as per the card states

I've check the FAQ for an answer to this question. And I do not understand how this question relates to the example of "stacking" in Munchkin.

My hunch is that you can do this because... well its hard to articulate - but my guess is you can.

You cannot discard a class card that you are currently using to activate one of that class's abilities, unless the class card itself says you can. The Thief does not.
