Default Duck of Earl: A "Go Up a Level"?

Hello there, I'm pretty new here and this is my first thread. But, here it goes.

Recently, me and my Munchkin friends have added on the the "Munchkin 4 – The Need for Steed" and updated our decks with "Munchkin" Go Up a Level". So, needless to say, we have some new cards that we aren't used to, including the "Duck of Earl" card, which has given us a few questions.

I have gone through the FaQ's and searched the forums for answers about this card, bud decided to start a thread because I couldn't find an answer. And the two questions are:

#1-Can the Duck of Earl be used to win?

#2-Is the Duck of Earl supposed to be played as soon as you draw it(like Divine Intervention)?

As of now, my line of logic is as follows:

The Duck of Doom is a curse card and therefore follows all the same rules as a normal curse. It's a door card and can be played instantly. So following that same line, I believe the Duck of Earl is meant to be some kind of modified "Go Up a Level" card, since it's a treasure card and seems to be the only other card that allows you to gain a level instantly. But because of that, you shouldn't be able to win with it.

Well? What's the answer? Any one have it? Maybe I'm just missing something, but hopefully you guys can enlighten me.

We'll get to this one in the morning. I don't want to try to tackle it without looking at the card.

Make sure you grab some coffee, because me and my friends argued about it for quite a while. Actually....they gave up on the subject since they all thought I was wrong. That's why I came to you guys. XD

From the rules:

Starting and
Finishing the Game

Decide who goes first by rolling the dice and arguing about
the results and the meaning of this sentence and whether the fact
that a word seems to be missing any effect.
Play proceeds in turns, each with several phases (see p. 2).
When the first player finishes his turn, the player to his left takes
a turn, and so on.
The first player to reach 10th level
wins . . . but you must reach 10th
level by killing a monster, unless a
card specifically allows you to win
another way.

So unless that card says right on it that it can give you the winning level, then it can't.

I appreciate the vote of confidence! And I'll be sure to get the extra-strong coffee on my way in tomorrow.

VERY good! Sometimes, I forget to go back to the basics. Thanks for the input!

OK, I'm looking at the card right now, so I can safely answer this question.

No. It doesn't say so, and cards that let you level up for the win MUST say so (as the later rule quote said).

Since it doesn't say you have to play it immediately, you can save it for later. It has the secondary rule, very rare on Munchkin cards, that you can also just discard it if you want.

Thanks everyone! This really clears things up! I can't believe that we missed something so simple in our debate during our last game. Hopefully, I'll have more threads to put up here. Great forums, btw. We've used it a few times to find answers and it's been a big help.
