Usually in my games, if I let the players roll (which is usual when they are actively searching) the player who's character critically failed will say something along the lines of "Apparently I'm staring at the lint in my navel."
If I'm making the roll I will either make up some untrue nonsense - "you're sure there's a hidden door behind the bookshelf" - or I don't tell them anything until they are blindsided - "the orc magically appears 3 feet in front of you." It all depends on the situation and what they were trying to find/search/sense for.
