He does it again: What's a sentient oak tree like?
A bunch of years ago, I asked the Omniscient Eye what different species of trees would be like, in terms of personality, if they were rendered sentient, e.g. via the "Awaken" spell from D&D3. I don't remember the details of the reply, although the method used was good (and clever!), and sadly I didn't save the article while I had the time.
I was sure about my first question, about amber, but I'm less sure that this question is okay, since I'm requesting a bit more information this time, but if Steven okays it, can somebody please quote or paraphrase from the article, to tell me what it said about oak trees. If it didn't say anything about oak trees, I don't need to know what else it said (although a pointer to a good online article about the ecology of various tree species - or for that matter if there's a bibliography at the end of the answer - would be welcome). Right now I only need the oak stuff, and it's okay if it gets condensed a bit. Sentient oak trees are people, just like you and me, and I don't want mine to be a stereotype, so I just need a rough sketch. Here's a link, although it's only to the sample version: click_me. |

I can quote (or attempt to paraphrase) if there is approval to do so. |

You could always defer to RUSH (youtube).
The Lyrics for those not wanting or able to watch to video: There is unrest in the forest, There is trouble with the trees, For the maples want more sunlight And the oaks ignore their pleas. The trouble with the maples, (And they're quite convinced they're right) They say the oaks are just too lofty And they grab up all the light. But the oaks can't help their feelings If they like the way they're made. And they wonder why the maples Can't be happy in their shade. There was trouble in the forest, And the creatures all have fled, As the maples scream "Oppression!" And the oaks just shake their heads So the maples formed a union And demanded equal rights. "The oaks are just too greedy; We will make them give us light." Now there's no more oak oppression, For they passed a noble law, And the trees are all kept equal By hatchet, axe, and saw. |

It doesn't appear as if the management intends to respond.

Judging from earlier responses to this and that, the management seems to prefer stuff like this to go through private email.

If there is an official response, getting it sticky'ed might be a good thing. Also, the relevant paragraph about oak trees was emailed to me a few days ago. Thanks to the person who did so, it was most helpful! |
