Default Dumb question about armed grappling

Does armed grappling, suffer a penalty for reach?

I.e., a reach 2 weapon, is that at -8 to do a grapple in close combat? (on top of the -3 if you haven't bought it as a technique)

But to offset this penalty, you can grab at longer distances?

Or

You are at no penalty to grapple with a weapon in close combat regardless of its, reach, but can ONLY grapple in close combat (unless you have a hook, it can entangle, or you use all out attack long)

I see no mention of reach-based penalties for armed grappling in Technical Grappling, and as it specifically notes Reach 1+ weapons as being better (inflict more CP) for grappling than Reach C, I'd say such penalties aren't suffered during a grapple.

As for grappling at range, TG10 notes that grapples take place in close combat (Reach C), and TG16 states armed grapples with melee weapons are at Reach C. Treatment of most other weapons also make mention of Reach C rather consistently. The only exceptions appear to be what you've already noted - Hooks (TG15), Entangling/Enveloping (TG15) and ranged Incrementing (TG16) weapons, and All Out / Committed Attack: Long (TG20/21). While not explicitly called out, I'd imagine the grappling of impaling weapons (TG15) works at range (although as such weapons are almost invariably Hooked as well, this probably falls under that category).

The initial grapple suffers posture-based penalties that are significantly dependent on Reach. Read the Melee and Stick characteristics (p. 16) and look at the examples. Let me know if that helps or not, and I'll revisit.

This does mean that while standing, you can grapple with a Reach 4 weapon at no penalty beyond the initial -2 for Armed Grapple as a technique. We also didn't give a big multiplier for weapons beyond reach 1 (felt +2 per die was enough).

Thanks that answers everything.

Think I have the posture penalty down.

If I am kneeling with a reach 4 weapon, I am at -8, if I am lieing down I am at -16.

If it was reach 3 it would be -6 or -12 for kneeling and being prone.

If you buy it as a technique you multiply by the new penalty.
