Thank you for this post. I found unsanitized versions of some of the classics there. An excellent resource I was ignorant of until today.

Re: October 19, 2019: Free Books For The Modern Reader
Very very nice.
Although their formatting guide advice changing and even removing part of the text to fit modern US style and spelling so I want to check some non-US works , especially those not written in english, to see how far they edit them.... Why, for exemple, remove ligatures (which will mess with french spelling) ? Or remove the words "The end" at the end of a book ? Those are part of the text ! And I am of 2 minds on updating to modern spelling of words. I can see the appeal, and they do warn not to use it on poetry but... there are works where period spelling is part of the charm... Edit : the french books are actually (or at least the few I checked) english translation, so ... they get a free pass on ligature. And while I *strongly* dislike replacing footnote by endnote, I guess it is understandable for ebooks... Nor all ereader will treat footnote correctly. Update (which I'll make to the post itself in a moment): The folks at Standard Ebooks do NOT take donations. Their hosting costs are minimal and all of their work is volunteer labor, so they don't see a reason to solicit money they don't really have a use for.
