Does it make a difference if the monster is your or your friends?

For a couple of reasons, yes. If you defeat a monster with your base color you get a DxM card. Plus during monster movement phase if a monster with your base color moves through the room you are in, it will stop and stay in your room even if it would still move further.

Also, since base color determines who roles the monster's dice, it can change who can play Loaded & Reloaded dice cards.
