Re: Connoisseur (Wine) and Connoisseur (Whiskey)
Interesting trivia. There's a study showing that if you combine flavorless red coloring with white wine, not even wine experts can tell it's actually a white wine. They will describe it as a red wine.
ETA: To be more precise, there are terms used for red wines and terms used for white wines. When given a white wine that has been colored red, wine experts will use terms for red wines to describe it.

Re: Connoisseur (Wine) and Connoisseur (Whiskey)
These studies mostly show that tasters will use the vocabulary that goes with the color spectrum they're seeing. It isn't the same as them being unable to tell red from white. It's like telling people they're judging film when they're really viewing television. They'll use film-crit terms, which aren't identical to TV-crit terms. However, several of the critics will inevitably note the TV-level production values. I wouldn't be surprised that those drinking red-colored white wine were thinking, "Wow, this is terrible red wine. It's like white wine with dye. But hey, we're here to judge red wine . . .".

Re: Connoisseur (Wine) and Connoisseur (Whiskey)
After thinking on it, I would probably suggest to a player to lay the split between Wine, Beer, and Spirits.

Not to be too pedantic about it (I quite like your split), but would Mead be considered a Wine or a Beer?

Yes, there is a lot left out and/or difficult to categorize. Another is fermented mare's milk.

Sorry... Couldn't help myself. Only the driest mead doesn't strike me as being cloyingly sweet. Perhaps someone someday will set me right. But probably not -- I've been to a mead bar, and only the dry mead with cranberry was good (and I'll say, it WAS good).

This probably doesn't default from anything else (except Savoir-Faire (Mongolia))

Re: Connoisseur (Wine) and Connoisseur (Whiskey)
For that matter, would sake be considered Wine or Beer? It's brewed in a way similar to beer, but it's served and enjoyed the way wine is...

See, somebody who is a connoisseur of that, they're likely to get kicked out of the party where the beer, wine and spirits connoisseurs hang out.
