It is not the dumpster fire we need, it's the dumpster fire we deserve.

I'm fairly pleased with 5e. I know nothing of 4e. Pathfinder has enough complexity that if I want that kind of game I'll play GURPS, but it is still 35-45% of the market, with 5e basically taking a larger but basically equal share. Add the OSR to that and you've basically encapsulated 9 of 10 dollars spent.

So, am I getting the basics of the system? Here's what I can fathom:
  1. Roll to start contact with a grappling skill as normal. Defender defends as normal.
  2. Once you hit and your foe fails to defend, you roll straight thrust damage, with the result being Control Points instead of Hit Points of damage.
  3. Holding the grip you just established inflicts a penalty to your foe's ST and DX at a 1:2 ratio of penalty to damage.
  4. On later turns, you can keep up the grip and try for more Control Points, up to your ST, or you can expend the ones you've already accumulated, either for combat maneuvers or for straight damage, which I presume is crushing unless you have an advantage otherwise.

Basically sound. The DX penalties scale: -1 for every ST/5 CP inflicted. You ca round as you like, bracketing 10 with a normal range (so -1 DX per 2 CP for ST 8-12, -1 per 3 CP for ST 13-17, etc) or make it so there's less fiddle (2 CP per -1 DX for 10-14, 3 CP for 15-19, 4 CP for 20-24, etc).

Ruddy hell, that's all much easier than I thought it would be, and not really any worse than the system as written.

I think part of the problem is that everyone thinks grappling systems must be terrible and complicated.

Okay, I'll bite. I've been looking around on his blog and haven't seen a writeup for this simplified version. Is it someplace else?

It's in his game, unpublished.

Can I have a page reference for that info? Your writing it out like that I think I get, but it's kinda confusing.

IMO, 5e is the best edition of D&D I've seen. I want to pick up the grappling supplement to use it in encounters next season. Hopefully it will have something I can port to my upcoming DF game as a bonus.
