Does this character match this video?
As an exercise, I wanted to create a character who would match this action scene: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qjYnHqegF14
What do you think? What changes would you make? I came up with (150pts): ST: 10 DX: 13 IQ: 10 HT: 10 Basic Speed: 7 Basic Move: 8 Basic FP: 12 Advantages: Perfect Balance (15) Double Jointed (15) Disadvantages: Enemies (-20) Quirk: dislikes wearing a shirt (-1) Skills: Acrobatics 15 Climbing 18 Forced Entry 15 Judo 14 Jumping 16 Karate 14 Running 12 Full Character Sheet can be viewed here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B-k...it?usp=sharing |

Needs more ST and probably HT if you're going for realism here. That guy is skinny but cut, probably gets a lot of cardio if he's in practice with stunts like that, and is not flinging himself around like that with ST 10.

Re: Does this character match this video?
Certainly more HT and/or some sort of Fit or even Very Fit. A lot of those stunts require significant FP expenditure. More ST is viable too, just because of a bit more HP, ST-based Climbing to lift-off, bonus damage for Forced Entry and overall bonus damage.
More Acrobatics. Double-Jointed also provides bonus to Escape, and this character certainly knows it (not in this video but later in the same movie). Breakfall techniqxue for Acrobatics. Lots of it. Some sort of Area Knwoledge and/or Tactics. Urban Survival. Daredevil, Luck and/or Serendipity. Or, if you don't mind against cinematics, drop last two lines and take Trained By A Master (Evasion -50%) and Urban Gym perk from Action 3.

Re: Does this character match this video?
That's David Belle. He's the reference character for the 250-point traceur in GURPS Action 3: Furious Fists. Leave off Luck [15] and Trained by a Master (Evasion, -50%) [15] and you would get a pretty good version of him. You would definitely want more ST and especially HT, and probably shoot for a bit more Acrobatics and Jumping, a bit less Climbing. Escape would be essential, too, for tight squeezes. His character Leïto in Banlieue 13 would add back the two cinematic advantages, but Belle pretty much is that good in real life otherwise.

If you wanted to embrace the cinematic, you could also add Serendipity (Aspected: Always a way out, -40%) [9/level].

Wow! As always this forum delivers. Thank you, I'm learning a lot. I'll check out traceur. I'm still not sure if I want to go cinematic or not, but all your input is very helpful!

Re: Does this character match this video?
Realistically and game-mechanically, that guy probably took a couple of HP on that last big jump, even if the landing was on soft gravel. You can only shave off 5 yards from a fall by RAW.
For the cinematic version: I've contemplated a cinematic "Super-Breakfall" technique to allow landing in a Crouch from any height, even after doing a shoulder roll to assign damage to the torso instead of the feet or legs. It'd be pretty easy to build with the technique creation rules in 4e Martial Arts, and not extremely expensive. Probably a default of Acrobatics -2 and a Max of Acrobatics (without a Technique Mastery perk). |

Re: Does this character match this video?
Realistically, jumping multiple stories is going to hurt however good you are. The difference here is mostly one of an Acrobatics roll converting something like "2d+2 crushing to a leg" to "1d+2 crushing to the torso." I'd probably be fine with even a real-life traceur having DR 1 (Limited, Falling Damage, -60%) on top of Acrobatics, in any campaign where martial artists can have limited DR. A few extra HP from good ST never hurt, either. Taking it all together would make such a stunt more attractive than fighting a bunch of thugs.

He apparently also knows kung fu. so maybe he learned some Secrets from the Shaolin monks...
